Nine months after the heartbreak of losing my rescue dog after 10 years together, I’d almost given up hope of finding another one to love and share my life again. I was sure on my regular visits to dog rescue homes, that one of those sad, frightened or eager faces and wagging tails, silently asking me to take them home would be the right dog for me. But time and again it was not to be and I came home ever disheartened.
I needed a different strategy! To my delight, a chance enquiry of a local vet practice seemed encouraging, which led me to Lulu’s Friends! I soon found here were people dedicated to rescuing and caring for abandoned or relinquished dogs, taking their time to find out the sort of dog one is looking for and undertaking a home check so they can carefully helppeople like me find the perfect match, however long that might take. I was encouraged to discover that prospective owners are able to foster their chosen dog initially, with the support of Lulu’s, before deciding whether to rehome it. It was reassuring to know that their rescue dogs had veterinary checks when taken in and are looked after by a team of foster carers until a new home is found. Suddenly, I felt positive about my search for another rescue dog!
Then one day they told me about Teddy, an endearing, sweet natured, friendly, affectionate and playful little dog whose owner had to give him up due to ill-health. Although older, at 11 years, than I’d been hoping for and also with a mild health issue, I fell in love with him on sight, fostered him for a whileand knew my search was over at last. It was helpful that Teddy’s medical history was known to Lulu’s so could be given to me. We’ve now been together for 9 months and Teddy has proved to be the most delightful character and companion, full of fun, funny, very clever and loves his walks, people and other dogs. It’s hard to believe he is now 12. I think we’ve both found our perfect match, thanks to Lulu’s Friends, and I feel privileged to have been able to give this little fellow a second chance of a happy life for as long as we may have together.
